Project Checklist

Get your home improvement project started on the right foot by running through this checklist. You will save time, money and disruptions by considering these details before you begin a project.

Create a wish list

  • Complete this sentence: If I could change 5 things about my house, it would be... ?
  • Look through books, magazines and websites. Make copies of ideas that appeal to you.
  • Browse retail stores and showrooms.
  • Talk to friends and family who have completed similar home improvement projects. Look at their completed project. Ask them what went well, and what they would do differently next time.
  • Attend open houses and note how upgrades improve the look and feel.

Fine-tune your ideas

  • Determine the scope of your project. If you are remodeling your kitchen, does it make sense to upgrade adjacent rooms now so you are disrupting your living space only once?
  • Consider whether your project will add more value to your home at the time of resale.
  • Will you be able to stay in the home during the project? If not, make other temporary living arrangements.
  • Determine the optimum timeline to complete the project to avoid disrupting plans or special events.
  • Summarize your project. Include as much detail as possible including measurements and preferred materials. Be prepared to discuss with potential contractors.

Find a contractor

  • Ask friends, coworkers and family for the names of contractors they recommend. Search the yellow pages, publications and the Internet.
  • Create a short list of contractors (3 – 5 names).
  • Call or email the contractors. Did they return your message promptly? Did they show an interest in your project? Did they provide the level of detail you were looking for when you asked questions?
  • Ask for references and contact them.
  • Ask if the contractors are licenses, bonded and insured.
  • Request bids. Note the recommendations some contractors may make to improve upon your original ideas.

Hire a contractor

  • The contractor should present a contract with agreed-upon materials, pricing, start date and completion date. The contractor should disclose whether a subcontractor would be brought in to complete any of the work.
  • Specify what action will be taken if the timeline is missed or if the quality of work does not meet expectations.


A solid start is key to a successful home improvement project. By taking time to plan ahead and securing financing in advance, you are sure to minimize the “stress and mess” and have a more enjoyable experience.
